What is Reflexology?

The overall principal of reflexology is that energy runs up and down between all parts of your body.  If your body is in a state of imbalance due to illness, injury or stress, your vital energy channels may become blocked and your body may not function effectively.

Reflexology opens up the bodies energy pathways, boosting the immune system, clearing toxins, improving circulation and encouraging the release of endorphins.  It encourages the body to work naturally to restore its own healthy balance, facilitating healing and optimal health.

Whilst the origins of reflexology date back to Ancient Egypt, modern reflexology was developed in the 1930's by Eunice Ingham.   She developed maps of the entire body on the feet, observing that congestion or tension in any part of the foot is mirrored in the corresponding part of the body.  The right foot corresponds to the right side of the body and the left foot corresponds to the left side of the body.

A Reflexologist will use their hands to apply gentle pressure and massage to areas of your feet which will relax you and stimulate the flow of energy, blood and nerve impulses.  A Reflexologist may detect subtle changes in specific points on the feet and by working on these points may affect the corresponding organ or system of the body.

Overall reflexology is a gentle, holistic therapy which may encourage your body to heal itself, treating the whole person not just your prevailing symptoms.
