What does a treatment involve?
Your first treatment will begin with a confidential consultation where we will look at your lifestyle as well as any current health issues. I will develop an individually tailored plan for you depending on where you are in your stage of conception or pregnancy.
You will then relax on a massage couch or chair and receive a gentle foot massage, followed by firm thumb and finger pressure over the foot reflex points. Afterwards we will discuss the findings and answer any further questions you may have.
How will it feel?
You will feel relaxed and soothed. Afterwards most people note a feeling of well-being and relaxation, others may feel very energised.
How many treatments should I have?
For some pregnancy conditions you may be advised to have a series of weekly treatments to get to the root cause of your issue, reducing to once or twice monthly as your body begins to respond. You may appreciate the overall health benefits and choose to continue to receive treatments to maintain your optimal health during pregnancy and beyond.
When shouldn’t a treatment be given?
It is best to wait during the 1st trimester of pregnancy. This is due to the high risk of miscarriage in the initial few months even though there is no evidence that reflexology can bring on a miscarriage.
Reflexology should be avoided with:
You should also not have a treatment if you have a high fever or an infectious disease; you suffer from Deep Vein Thrombosis, there is a risk of preeclampsia or you have gangrene.
If you are diabetic you should check your blood sugar before and after treatments, as reflexology aims to help balance the endocrine system and insulin production.
Can reflexology cause miscarriage?
Some people are under the misconception that reflexology can be harmful during pregnancy in case it causes a miscarriage. This is not the case. A miscarriage is generally a sign that there has been a problem with the baby's development or the mother's health and cannot be caused by a reflexology treatment.
Should I let my midwife and Doctor know I am having reflexology?
It is a good idea to let them know. Most will highly recommend it, especially if you are suffering from any back pain, morning sickness or swollen ankles.
I have a verucca. Can I still have treatment?
Many people have corns, callouses, verrucas and other ailments on their feet. To a Reflexologist these can be important signs. They don't prevent you from having a treatment. If a part of your foot is inaccessible for some reason, then the hand can be treated instead.
